That is exactly what we did.

No it doesn't even distantly resemble what we did.

Not before we were there it wasn't.

Which is mostly irrelevant to the question of what to do now.

Would you have been this patient had Bill Clinton messed things up this bad?

If things where just about exactly as they are now? Probably. Its possible I would have been less patient back when things where at their worst.

How about if Obama takes office and things still are a mess after four years - will you be willing right now to accept that as progress?

If things are now better after another four years than we would hardly be making progress would we?

We have been there going on 7 years and things aren't better - they are worse.

No they aren't. When we started the Taliban ruled the country.

If after another 7 years of a democratic government things are still going downhill

You mean if they start going downhill. They haven't been downhill in a sustained way over the last 7 years (although they apparently have been in the last few months).

will you still be willing to suggest that ...."things aren't going to hell in a hand basket"

If things are just about the same as they are now, than things would not be going to hell in a hand basket. But a lack of any progress over another 7 years would of course be a negative thing. "Lack of progress" is hardly good, but its not the same as "things falling apart".
