Ho hum...

the alternative energy industry is winning a few battles against the oil industry.

There is no "battle". All forms of energy are and will be needed to keep our economy moving.

I am completely flabbergasted by the amount opposition to getting this country oil independent

Point 1, this country will not become "oil independent" during your lifetime, and your children's as well. Point 2, the "opposition" to realistic energy development comes from ecos and lefties and the political winds are changing fast. Obama and Reid and Pelosi are on the losing side of this issue. Even the majority of Dems are hurting enough to now favor more drilling and development in "off limit" areas.

ensure that we never get off of our oil addiction.

I get so tired of hearing that stupid mantra spouted over and over again. Even Bush, who's more right than wrong on energy, repeats that nonsense (edit: he's wrong on ill conceived ethanol mandates as well). Saying that we are "addicted to oil" is the same as saying your body is addicted to blood. Oil is in every aspect of our lives, civilization and high living standards, and will be for many decades. Repeating mindless slogans about how windmills and solar panels will soon magically replace oil is ludicrous pap.

When I come across someone who is for continuing our dependence on oil, my primary thought is how unpatriotic they are.

When I come across someone who thinks that cutting off our lifeblood is the right thing to do, my primary thought is that they've either got their head in the sand or really want to destroy our economy and living standards...
