Well if they are saying they cant' compete in order to try to get special favors, than it is mostly a bunch of BS.

OTOH they are shrinking as a percentage of the world's production and reserves as more and more of the world gets closed off to them. (not just in other countries, but also places like ANWR and most of the offshore area of the US). If that trend continues eventually they will be marginalized.

But why that would be in many ways unfortunate, and in a sense unfair, I don't think that special benefits from congress would be justified by that fact, and if what they are arguing for is such special benefits, than I'm back to saying the statements are "mostly a bunch of BS". In technical economics terms they would be "rent seeking", which is something I oppose.

If they are just arguing for opening new areas to drilling, well then their statements make more sense to me.

But its hard to judge because I don't know the specific statements your talking about, and I don't know what they wanted from congress, so I'm guessing possibilities and responding, rather than really knowing the actual details.
