Kirkpatrick Sale is an interesting author, generally fun to read, but not quite as data oriented as Thompson; nor as careful with how far you can carry a generalization. One of the reasons Thompson's work was so enormously influential was his attention to the nitty gritty of every day life. Well, that, and about the best historical writer anyone has ever seen. And debater. I forget which debating society--Oxford or Cambridge, but I gather tales are still told of his debate with Casper Weinberger over deployment of US anti-missile missiles in Germany in the 80s.
