There's another kind of heat pump on the market called the Acadia that does not include the costly underground pipes and works in below zero temperatures, see: gotohallowell.com I think it's about 10K less than the geothermal type. Also, some states offer rebates for installing geothermal or other heat pump systems. My state provides a 70% rebate, so 36K would be more like 10K. These are the kind of governemnt incentives that would be useful to help us kick our oil habit. With heating oil approaching $5/gallon, the paypack for a new heat pump system will be much faster than previously, and who knows where the price of oil is going? If Peak Oil really is here, and it appears to have arrives, then $10/gallong heating oil might be coming soon.
