Yes, and CA has the greatest frequency of Amtrak trains outside of the NE. San Diego, SFO and LA have more mass transit than cities of equivalent size in the rest of the country. For example, LA now has more mass transit than Chicago. b) Sacramento is a dump. 'Nuff said. That's no excuse for it to be so dependent on cars.c) Senor Villaragosa is talking about plans to greatly expand Los Angeles' mass transit system, including a "subway to the sea." LA's doing fine........it finally got on the mass transit badwagon 15 years ago although "the subway to the sea" has taken a long time to get its approvals. The point of my comparison of Stockholm to Sacramento was to point out how far behind American cities are with their European counterparts. These days it presents a serious problem for people trying to find alternatives to driving their cars to work.d) What does Seattle have for mass transit? Oh yeah, those weird tunnels for buses. And a useless, rickety monorail. And I don't remember any mass transit options between Bellvue and Seattle, or Tacoma and Seattle. What's going on Ted? You haven't been here for a long time. We have commuter lines going north to Snohomish county and south to Tacoma. There is talk of putting commuter rail on one of the floating bridges connecting Bellevue and Seattle. Seattle's first light rail line opens up at the end of this year. Three more lines are under design. Seattle's first streetcar in 100 years started service last fall. Now there are efforts underway to connect via streetcar all inner city neighborhoods with downtown. But I am the first to admit that Seattle is behind cities like Portland, San Diego, Denver and Dallas which are leading the nation in terms of new mass transit. Seattle screwed up but still is moving forward. However, there is a whole slew of American cities from Birmingham to Memphis to Nashville to Indianapolis to Cincinnati to OK city that are way behind the curve.
