Great lines all and even if he didn't come up with them himself, which seems likely, they are worth repeating. Unfortunately, around the world, including in the USA, government imposts, regulation and kleptocracy continue apace. Democracies were once very far from welfare states. Unfortunately, bludgerism is on the increase everywhere.

You'd think that after a couple of hundred years they'd have made enough laws by now. But when you are a hammer, you just keep hammering away, until everything is beaten down.

Sometimes the process is reversed, such as in NZ in the mid 1980s, but it's soon back to a full head of steam.

NZ now is plunging into a recession with huge debts due to revalued houses coming due while oil prices do a flanking action. But I quite like it because the roads are now not blocked constantly. I can drive around more freely. Low value driving has been removed from the roads.

The reason the USA won the cold war was because the USSR gave it up, thanks to Gorby introducing Glasnost and human values in place of the old gulag, murder and salt mines. But whether Reagan had cut military spending instead of increasing it, or not, Gorby still would have given it away as a pointless enterprise.

In fact, Reagan and Bush I should have given a lot more support to Gorby instead of to Osama and in that case, the Twin Towers could well be still standing. Blowback and the Law of Unintended Consequences meant Gorby lost, great economic destruction occurred in the USSR, Osama won and the USA lost the battle of the Twin Towers.

Carter and Zbigniew Brzezinski succeeded in giving the USSR their Vietnam, but the unintended consequence was that it has now turned into another Vietnam for the USA. Put it down as another blunder by Jimmy Carter's crew. But Carter was long gone when Gorby came on the scene and the situation could have been salvaged in co-operation with Gorby.

Unfortunately, the CIA and co insisted on making life difficult for Gorby by helping Osama and Islamic Jihad. Now, the chickens have come home to roost.

That's what happened.

There's more to life than "winning". There is a way called co-operation, synergy, symbiosis, trade, mutuality. Winning is for tribes of chimps scrapping for territory, girls, found-wealth and alpha male dominance hierarchy supremacy.

Of course winning against criminals and conquerors is an excellent idea [such as Maggie versus Argentina]. Gorby was not a criminal. He was a co-operator. Beating co-operators is stupid and criminal in itself.
