maurice, how long have your neurons been frozen?

i will say we owe henry II a great deal for starting a court system. we own henry VIII a lot for taking the first step away from church control of the government. we owe elizabeth I for initiating new world colonization, english pirates, and adventurers in the new world who over time made sure the english language had architectural control over the world. we also owe elizabeth I for not having any heirs so that james I could take over and unite england and scotland. we owe james I for the puritans getting the hell outta there and eventually coming to massachusetts. we owe george III for being a nutcase and making the colonists mad enough to go to war with england and win.

something we don't owe you is the time of day.

Reagan was a bystander, albeit one who wasted a huge fortune on unnecessary military efforts, while Gorby gave up on the whole idea of USSR and communist expansion

What makes you think that the second event was unrelated to the first? Ol' Gorby was very proud of being the "President" of the mighty USSR, and he did not give up the idea of running an expansionist empire because of humanistic reasons. He was issued a challenge he couldn't meet, and he decided -- if you can't beat them, join them. The rest is history - Perestroika acquired an uncontrollable momentum of its own... etc.

Gorby still believes in Communism, even today.

What I understand is that without U.S. involvement in WWII the outcome would have been in doubt. Our productive capacity and willingness to share with the allies, along with the courage and great sacrifice of daylight bombing to continually erode Germany's resources was probably the biggest contribution to ending the war.

Had Hitler been able to concentrate his full resources on a one front war....Stalin would have probably been toast. Not so sure that would have been a totally bad outcome. But, screw the both of them. Had the result been the other way around there is little doubt in my mind that Stalin would have rolled over the whole of Europe.

You can go back and read how I explained that it wasn't Reagan who stemmed the tide .....No thanks. We had generations of flaws in dealing with the U.S.S.R. Plus, we are in the process of dealing with our own spat of socialism....we could use a bunch of Ronnie Reagans about now.

The USA is currently in the process of ditching that silly habeas corpus stuff....Really? No shortage of hyperbole in N.Z. is there?

Free elections in Africa?....Let's hope it happens in our lifetime. You have noticed the elections in Iraq with actual ballot choices...haven't you?
