You put a lot of stock in a foreign publication while ridiculing an on-site personal observation. I don't understand the ridicule.

I do understand why you like "The Economist," as it espouses a lot of the same views you do:

endorsed Harold Wilson and Bill Clinton, and espoused a variety of liberal causes: opposing capital punishment from its earliest days, while favouring penal reform and decolonisation, as well as—more recently—gun control and gay marriage.[18]

While I'm at it, they just resurfaced about half of the freeway going through the biggest metropolitan area in my corner of the world. The other half needs it too.

Down in California they are building interchanges as fast as the yuppies scarf up new housing developments that are taking up agricultural land and converting its use forever.

So, while the infrastructure has its problems as you suggest, it is not all doom and gloom, as you also suggest.

Personally, I do not think a one term state legislature with a half a Senate term under his belt is capable of solving this problem. If you get your way, we will find out, won't we?

By the way, I got a big laugh out of The Economist's droll English humor:
