Republicans argued we shouldn't pass a windfall profits tax on the oil companies because the oil companies were run by such big crooks they would just illegally pass the tax on to consumers.

Windfall taxes are a dumb idea. Of course, all taxes are passed on to consumers.


Good. The more expensive gas becomes the more likely we will find all alternatives. And the windfall tax can be used to advance the research of those alternatives.

Is that true? It isn't. That's not the way markets work.

Now, if the demand is elastic enough, then consumers might pay the higher prices. But if it isn't, those taxes will have to be absorbed elsewhere.
