You completely missed my point. Our government invented the Internet along with the help of some researches in Europe. However, our government was very friendly towards the Internet being turned over to industry so that US citizens could make money on it. In addition, they cut all sorts of deals to subsidize the industry and ensure that American companies and citizens got the lion's share of the patents and profits.

Ah you are only seeing those profits being made by private American companies as opposed to the government. That makes a little more sense. However, the only subsidy I know of for the internet is the sales tax exemption. Is there something else significant that is a subsidy of the net? And did the government really steer patents and profits to American companies or did American companies simply beat everyone else?

Is the internet and development of Silicon Valley industries (micro electronics, communications) the result of a conscious national planning effort?

I know those industries benefited from byproducts of defense and space programs. But I don't see the government planning effort steering the creation of new industries and companies.
