The net buy/sell doesn't really matter much if the buyers are more willing to buy at the ask and raise bids relative to the sellers willingness to sell at the bid and lower offers.... so in the short term speculation can raise the price above the physical supply/demand equilibrium. The question is for how long and by how much? There doesn't seem to be any research on this. At least I haven't seen it quoted in all the voluminous discussion online by economists recently on the subject.

If someone wants an economics PhD topic seems it's up for grabs.
