You can either raise the rate or extend the cap. Both have been done since inception. I maintain that actually there has been more of the latter since inception although not recently. 12.5% total is big nut. I would rather see 8% total and cap removed. In order to keep it more like a pension i would allow deductibility of fica in some fashion for the poor and working middle class so they can get some of it back. Or just eliminate the incmoe tax up to X dollars in earnings. There are ways to fix that will maintain inegrity and make it harder for you to call it welfare which is what you seem to want to do.

Lifting the FICA cap is the first step in turning Social Security into "welfare for the elderly." Something Obama might want to keep in mind, but probably won't.

Agreed. Everybody has to contribute. But raising the fica cap can be part of it.

The 'blessed' people who really make out on SS are the disabled... those very lucky folks. Next are the ones who barely made minimum wage and now have the luxury of trying to live on $800 a month when rent is >$500 a month.

I think we should stomp on those 'lucky' people... they are making a 'killing'.

What would be the difference between arguing the minimum wage should be a living wage, and social security benefits should be a living "benefit" of the same amount?

We can keep this govt socialism going all day long until the govt takes all proceeds from productive individuals.
