the economics don't make any sense. Tis all I'm saying. A Prius might last 10-15 years -- maybe less if its always in the sun. A solar roof lasts 30 years. Thats a factor of 2x right there.

A Prius is rarely going to be in the optimal light (tilted, facing south), whereas a solar roof is designed to be in the optimal light situation. That's probably another 50%.

The Prius will be undercover for chunks of time (in a garage, under a tree, etc). Also, if the Prius is charging and the battery is at capacity, the Prius doesn't add any power to the battery. Add another 30% for those factors. A rooftop system feeds the grid, so everything counts.

So yes, a system that is 4x more expensive is a fashion statement :)
