anyone could have predicted the fall of the Soviet Union. In fact he himself saw it coming

I believe it. I also saw that the Soviet system was ultimately unsustainable. I even figured out that when the end comes, it would not start in the form of a popular uprising (which would be brutally suppressed), but rather as a series of reforms coming from the Kremlin.

My Father, who was a WWII vet, used to say that eventually the USSR will fall apart like a house of cards. He was right, and he lived to see it happen.

This afternoon I happened to have a conversation about this with a (former) Hungarian man, a Surgeon, who left Budapest after the 1956 events. He also knew that USSR will some day go kaput - but he didn't believe that this would happen during his lifetime.

The big surprise about the collapse of the USSR was the timing - and the major figure who precipitated it all was Ronald Reagan. People forget how Gorby would storm out of meetings, like the one in Reykjavik... how he orchestrated peace offensives, with useful idiot students "demenstruating" all over Western Europe... and all this in an attempt to derail Reagan's military initiatives which would reveal to the world the USSR's inability to compete.

You can't beat them - join them. And Gorby was forced to take a chance with the Big Restructuring.

That's because everyone knows (despite their animosity towards the U.S.A.) that in the end, democracy wins out.

It will happen in the ME too........eventually.

I predict that!
