Al quaeda and Taliban are separable. If Taliban track record wasnt so bad, i might advocate playing that game. I would also separate pakistan out from afganistan. Afganistan is like a gnat in the eye that rears its ugly head each spring and summer. Pakistan (South Wahiristan) is 7X24X365 threat with a week off for ramadan. Thats where the evil is hatched and its what al and i were brainstorming about yesterday. If you cut off the head, afganistan will come back, and the world overall can breathe easier. How to cut the head off the snake is the issue.
Same goes with iran over nukes. Cant allow that to happen and yet i see no real way to stop it if the iranians continue. Saying deterrence worked with USSR is not a good enough reply. Going to war in our sorry condition isnt a good option either.

"In the middle of the afgan civil war is al quaeda/pashtun terrorism."

Right. We are losing ground in Afghanistan. And, it is a shame. With a fairly small investment in forces and money, we could have put Afghanistan back on the map. They've had decades of war, civil and otherwise, and chaos. Which is why the Taliban keeps popping up. Brutal they are, but under them people had at least some semblance of peace.

But, we have taken our eye off the ball. The Taliban is bidding for control and al Qaeda has established themselves in Pakistan.

Round and round it goes...

But war is so good for business.
