I complain when they want to raise my taxes to fix the problems created by the taxes they are wasting. Haven't you heard that the only way a liberal can fix a problem is to throw more money at it?

The school system is broke, all the money in the world isn't going to turn out better students under the current "management".

"on the acuteness of one's social conscience" and/or how importantly one values capitalism as the way to maximize wealth in america. Are you claiming that folks like Ten and me are somehow lacking in social conscience? Thats not fair. Its just a different take on how folks can best be helped. I like rising tides more than redistribution of wealth that goes too far. Unlike inode, harris etc, i pay my taxes without complaint. I just dont want to see rates that kill the capitalist urge.

I don't disagree with much of this....but it's not black and white. These are complex issues...

Michael, > Are you claiming that folks like Ten and me are somehow lacking in social conscience? Thats not fair.

I've heard that false claim on many, many occasions. All is fair in love and politics.

Another favorite straw man of liberalism. Those who complain about how high taxes are must be against paying them, must be against the whole concept of government, and must be selfish jerks whose opinions should not count.

I for one hate it when government wastes my hard-earned tax money on bureaucracy, pointless posturing, and "reforms" that do nothing but ensure that the current bozos in power stay there forever. Look at how hard it is to fire underperforming public employees such as teachers and health care workers, for instance. Seniority ensures that kiss-ass politics pays off much better than hard work and good performance in the long run.

Of course, when the context of the debate centers around the existence of said government programs rather than the efficiency thereof, nothing will ever be done. My favorite example, of course, is King-Drew Medical Center in south L.A., but that's just one of many, many examples across our entire system of government.

Can you blame me for not wanting to contribute more to the problem? Or forcing the "rich" to do the same?

I don't complain about the taxes I pay. Too much. But having prepared in excess of 20,000 tax returns over the years, I can tell you first hand about the damage done to self employeds as well as wage earners.

But it is important to remember that FICA/Medicare taxes are the most regressive taxes of all, and impact the low/mid earners far worse than they do anyone else. I pay very little SS tax today, and have no problem with it. But I have seen what it does to the most challenged in society and it is tough. You can't fix that by taxing the wealthy, however.
