This brings to mind an interesting story. In the late 1970’s I was working military communications (DEW Line and NARS system). Not much satellite at that time.

The long haul military communications was run by civilian contractors operating remote communications and monitoring sites. One of these sites was in the Faroe Islands in the North Atlantic.

A buddy of mine was buying and bringing in Krugerrands of various sizes via the military mail system. He was using these to make large purchases of Fareo island property.

Pretty soon people in the main town (Torshavn) began to use the gold he brought in as replacement for the Fareoese currency, they were willing to pay a good premium over spot so he started bringing in more.

Needless to say this one contractor brought about a financial crisis on the island. He was removed from his position at the request of the Fareo Island authorities.

We all got a good laugh out of it at the time
