Ag workers? Some expect much more hand labor; the country farming like me. There's a weird thought. But that certainly would give the current pickers work, only maybe in other parts of the country, or maybe a return to the migrant worker days of the Depression. And, contrary to popular thought, it occurs to me that it may always be worthwhile to ship produce across country. They did it for years, by train, using refrigerator cars. Fraught with peril cuz of the technology of the time, but surely we can get train loads of lettuce back east, or oranges up north, by rail. Especially if we go electric. Maybe even out of season produce from South America, by boat.Only the real perishables need to be flown. (Raspberries; have a 5 day shelf life, for every hr between picking and cold storage, you lose one day of shelf life). I've lost touch with my school, now that the kids are gone. I expect bus service will be impacted again. There used to be a composting/vermaculture project, tied in with a student garden, with some produce going to the cafeteria. Don't know if it is still happening. Localization guru Jason Bradford has his mini-farm at the school where my granddaughter will go. Don't know if they give produce to the school, or if the kids are involved. I need to ask him.Message 24404923 youtube..youtube.com Far cry from when I was a kid, with free transportation to sporting and musical events and field trips, after-school sports for the cost of insurance (except football, I think). Now it's school by bake sale.
