I think some of them are just plain dumb (as in a bag of hammers, as one SIer used to post here). Others just try to torture logic hoping that the other person lacks basic faculties.

Remember, lots of folks hate math with a passion, and are much more adept at powers of persuasion. These people have difficulties with numbers and logical construction. Politicians especially fit this description.

Others are just selfish beyond belief and want other countries to bear the burden of energy production, etc. They are the ones who yell NIMBY the loudest.

I agree that the Democrats are vulnerable on energy. But I think you'll get more traction talking about drilling rather than refineries, i.e. "It's the price of oil, stupid!"

Refiners are hurting bad due to soaring crude prices, falling gasoline demand, and tapped out consumers who can no longer afford high-priced goodies when they're at the gas station. Credit card companies are making more on each gas sale than the gas stations are. Have you checked the stock price of refiners lately? They are being crushed...
