Let me try to answer this in part----this is opinion based upon observation and life experience. In addition to the scientific advances----i.e. the sonogram that can detect details of the unborn child----I offer the following. Until Roe V Wade, January 22, 1973 Supreme Court Decision, most people didn't think about abortion as a possibility. Abortions were a decision made by the wealthy when their daughters became pregnant by someone not acceptable. Most people had never heard of 'abortion'. If a highschool girl got pregnant, she dropped out of school and had the baby and often times married the father. Or, she went away to a home for unwed mothers---had the baby and put it up for adoption. First, abortion was sold as just a little procedure to eliminate an unwanted pregancy with little thought of what was being eliminated. What the Supreme Court Case Roe V Wade did was to bring the whole subject out into the open-------what exactly is abortion? Is it a mere medical procedure? Is it the taking of a human life and soul? The passage of R V Wade set the stage for the philosophical debate and battle putting the government and politics in the center of the debate. There arose the various groups both con and pro abortion or pro and con life. The subject of abortion was hotly debated in such groups as the AAUW, American Association of Universty Women in the early 1970's------Women's Commisions set up in the Carter Era stacked with abortion advocates-----and of course Bella Abzug's NOW, National Organizaiton of Women.Enter Ronald Reagan President Ronald Reagan, the Great Communicator, became the voice for life of the unborn children. This was just one of many issues that President Reagan would tackle and champion during his Presidency. The link below is to President Reagan's essay "Abortion and the Conscience of the Nation" which can be bought on Amazon.amazon.com One cannot understand how we moved to a majority supporting life in America without reading Reagan's. small book, essay. Now to Obama: Obama's abortion position has been consistently for abortion-----the most recent example being his reference to his own daughters----if they should make a mistake he would like them to be able to have something done (Paraphrased.) I would not anticipate his changing and would not trust him if he did change before the election as it would be to gain votes. How many of us here have heard politicians promise one thing if elected and do the opposite after getting elected. mj
