P.S. - Think about the modern markets as fueled by retirement accounts. Historically, fiat was distrusted, and one usually kept one's savings (if any) in gold and silver coins stored in a (hopefully) safe place. That gold/silver had a fairly constant value over long periods of time, save a few notable black swan events like the gold extracted from the Americas in the 16th century. But now gold has been displaced by fiat, and there has also evolved the modern retirement account, 401k, IRA and the like. So, as the savings in fiat dollars depreciate over time, one is forced to invest them to hopefully earn enough to offset inflation, so that the savings will retain value over the decades. And retirement account rules force one to invest mostly in bonds and stocks. And therefore, unlike stuffing gold coins under the mattress and sticking to ourselves, we now are funneled into the Wall Street game by necessity, and subject to constant shearing (and worse). It's a corrupt game, but the only one in town.
