You don't have to convert every vehicle to electricity right away. If you convert the majority of cars but leave the inter-city trucks on diesel you will be moving in the right direction. Ultimately more trains will be the answer to inter-city and long commute travel. I see no reason why you shouldn't be able to ride your electric car onto a train. Charge while you travel, and then drive off for the last few miles of your journey. It would be like hopping on the ferry at Seattle.
