What was the hallmark of the 20th century? Well, travel certainly was one. Automobiles, airplanes. But the biggest innovations revolved around communications. Film, TV, even computers were mainly communication devices. Not to mention radio and phones. We are not too far from having the technology to put everyone in contact with everyone else any where on the planet 24/7. With GPS and the plans under the Patriot Act to put RFID readers in the door frames of public buildings so the people entering and exiting can be identified and tracked, then it will also be possible to know where someone is also. Add in the video cameras at intersections and, if we follow the British, video cameras everywhere else...

You get the picture. Before too much longer, it will be a job requirement to be available at all times. Because it makes sense for someone in a critical position. And the definition of "critical" tends to get broader over time.
