Interesting...its a problem that may never be overcome.

Never is a long time.

The efficiency of Photovolatic cells is still in single digits. It will never be 100%, but it seems to me there is a plenty of room for improvement.

BTW, The problem is being addressed from 2 ends:
- One is the percentage of light energy that is converted to electrical energy (going up)
- The other is overall cost of the panels (going down)

So in your particular case, if you were to put up a solar panel 15 years ago, it might have cost you $40,000 and it would generate some x Watts of power. If you were to do it now, it may cost you $20,000 and generate 2x Watts. If you do it 15 years from now, the cost may be $10,000 and output 4x Watts.
