I don't have to read books about it. Nixon was widely hated. Tricky Dick was his nickname. I didn't support Nixon myself. Though I couldn't vote for McGovern either.

He was smart, was good with policy and he understood the way the political game was played. But, like any character in a Greek tragedy, he had a fatal flaw. Well, two, actually. One, he believed in the imperial presidency. And two, he was out to destroy enemies, real or perceived. Smirk has both of these two, but he lacks the other qualities that Nixon had. So they don't stand out as much... His base was what he called "The Silent Majority". And it took Watergate to dent that.
