If the backers of alternatives are right that some great non-fossil fuel alternative will come along in the future, it will still take decades to transition to that.

This transition, which corresponds with rapid rise in demand from new middle class in China, is the time when the need for oil is the greatest, since there are no viable alternatives. Saving it now fo later, when there will be alternatives is probably not a good idea.
