I hope those are not real numbers.

I made up those numbers just to illustrate the point. But those numbers are not completely without basis. Some time ago, the average efficiency of these cells was in the single digits, what is available now is in low teens, and there are some experimental cells that can go to efficiencies of up to 40%.

So if you deployed solar panels years ago, and the efficiency was only about 7%, you would do twice as good today with some 14%, and when the experimental technologies gain commercial acceptance, 28% efficiency some years from now is not out of the question (using non-exotic materials).
