Mets Take Nine-Game Winning Streak Into All-Star Baseball Break

By Erik Matuszewski

July 14 (Bloomberg) -- The New York Mets take a nine-game winning streak into Major League Baseball's All-Star break after completing a three-game sweep of the Colorado Rockies yesterday with a 7-0 victory.

Mets starting pitcher Mike Pelfrey tossed eight shutout innings to win his sixth straight decision. Since starting the season with a 2-6 record and a 5.33 earned run average, the Mets' 2005 first-round draft pick has gone 6-0 with a 2.26 ERA in his past nine starts.

Carlos Beltran and Carlos Delgado hit home runs for the Mets, who improved to 51-44 and trail the first-place Philadelphia Phillies (52-44) by a half-game in the National League Eastern Division. The Phillies beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 6-3 yesterday as Pat Burrell hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning.

The Boston Red Sox moved past the Tampa Bay Rays into first place in the American League East.

The Red Sox beat the Baltimore Orioles 2-1 to improve to 57-40 and take a half-game lead over the Rays (55-39), whose losing streak hit seven games with a 5-2 loss to the Cleveland Indians yesterday.

The New York Yankees trail the Red Sox by six games in the AL East after losing 4-1 in Toronto.

A.J. Burnett took a shutout into the ninth inning for the Blue Jays before allowing a home run to Jason Giambi at Rogers Centre in Toronto.

Few Days Off

``Our team can use a few days off to relax our minds and get ready for the second half and to make a push,'' Yankees manager Joe Girardi said in a televised interview. ``We have to play good baseball if we want to play in October.''

The Yankees wore black armbands in memory of longtime outfielder and announcer Bobby Murcer, who died two days ago at the age of 62, 18 months after being diagnosed with brain cancer.

Murcer spent 39 years with the Yankees, including most of a 17-year playing career that ended in 1983. The five-time All- Star also won three Emmy Awards during his tenure as a Yankee game analyst.

The Los Angeles Angels and Chicago Cubs are tied for baseball's best record at 57-38.

The Angels beat Oakland 4-3 on Erick Aybar's infield single in the ninth inning and lead the A's by six games in the AL West.

Giants Beat Cubs

The Cubs lost to the San Francisco Giants 4-2 and lead the NL Central by 4 1/2 games over St. Louis and five games over Milwaukee.

The Cardinals beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 11-6, while the Brewers edged the Cincinnati Reds 3-2 as C.C. Sabathia pitched a complete game.

Although Arizona lost to Philadelphia to fall under .500 at 47-48, the Diamondbacks lead the NL West by one game over the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Dodgers beat the Florida Marlins 9-1.

The Chicago White Sox still lead Minnesota in the AL Central by 1 1/2 games after both clubs lost. Texas outscored the White Sox 12-11 and Detroit topped the Twins 4-2.

In yesterday's other major-league results, it was Seattle 4, Kansas City 3; Houston 5, Washington 0; and Atlanta 12, San Diego 3.

Baseball's All-Star Game between the American and National leagues will be played at Yankee Stadium in New York tomorrow.

Wrigley Field to Host NHL Game Between Blackhawks & Red Wings

By Alexander George

July 16 (Bloomberg) -- The Chicago Blackhawks and Stanley Cup-champion Detroit Red Wings will square off at Wrigley Field on New Year's Day in the third National Hockey League game to be played outdoors.

The game will start at noon Chicago time and mark the 701st meeting between the Central Division rivals, the league announced. It will be televised on NBC in the U.S., while CBC and RDS will air the game in Canada.

``The NHL is delighted to bring its most historic rivalry to one of the most historic venues in sports,'' NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said in a news release.

Wrigley Field is the home to Major League Baseball's Chicago Cubs. It's known as the ``Friendly Confines'' and features ivy on the outfield walls.

Chicago beat out New York for the third installment of the NHL Winter Classic, though Bettman held out the possibility of an outdoor regular-season game in New York in the future.

``We look forward to continuing discussions regarding the possibility of playing a future Winter Classic game at the new Yankee Stadium,'' Bettman said.

The Red Wings defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins 4 games to 2 for their fourth NHL Stanley Cup championship in 11 seasons. The Blackhawks haven't won the title since 1961.

On Jan. 1, 2008, some 73,000 fans sat in wind-blown snow and sleet to watch the Pittsburgh Penguins beat the Buffalo Sabres 2-1 in a shootout at Ralph Wilson Stadium in Orchard Park, New York. The NHL's first outdoor game was at Edmonton's Commonwealth Stadium on Nov. 22, 2003, with the Montreal Canadiens defeating the Oilers 4-3 in front of 57,167 fans.
