Solar and wind power are already cheaper than coal or oil if you factor in the cost of pollution and the diseases it causes. Right now fossil fuels are getting a free ride on most of the impact.

That may very well be the case, which is why I favor non-fossil fuels as the fuels of the future, but it does not change the fact that these alternative energies need to win on pure cost, excluding collateral damage.

A nightmare scenario, IMO, is "institutionalization" of high price of energy, at current or near term peak, and treating it as a norm rather than aberration.
