My father fought in the Pacific. He had command of the USS Argonne which was the first ship into Tokyo Bay after the Japanese surrender. I remember him recounting a story where his ship held during a typhoon while others were damaged or capsized. I remember meeting some of the great officers of that war.

But he never spoke of any battles or anything like that.
