How can CDMA infrastructure costs be 20-30% below those for GSM, when (so called) monopolist Qualcomm controls the royalty rate and chip market for CDMA? <gg>

"As soon as China Telecom completes the system migration, all of its current 70 million PHS subscribers will be shifted to CDMA system"

One way to read that quote "Slacks" is that CT will be shutting down the PHS system in October and giving out/sellilng 70 million cdma phones. This is a huge possibility for Qualcomm, perhaps the biggest short term economic event in all the years I have held Q stock. Wow...HF

Thoughts & Questions on China Telecom.

1) $12.5 billion in investment is $500 million to Q bottom line in royalties alone for 09. What about chip and equipment sales? Another $500 million to bl? What percentage can be tagged as new money and up current 09 estimates?

2) $20 CDMA phones attractive to China's 500-800 million rural farmers. So CDMA coverage in rural China planned? Would EVDO overlay be cost effective to provide broadband to rural China?

Any other implications?

UPDATE: Oops! I guess not all that 12.5 billion is for CDMA equipment, per se... towers, antennas, other stuff....
