I'm sorry to hear about your friend. Half the battle is mental. I knew I was going to beat my cancer, nothing was going to stop me. I sought out different doctors, got second opinions, and followed orders regarding follow up, treatment, doe's and don't-s, and only disobeyed my doc once.

The result was my second child. ;)

I don't know why I knew what I knew.......I just did. Maybe your friend knows too?
