Don't forget global warming. Manmade global warming, that is. As if there's any other kind.

BTW they say global warming causes kidney stones too.

I can trigger earthquakes by directing my thought waves at the tectonic forces that control them.

I will demonstrate this to you at approximately 4:47 a.m. on July 18, 2008.

The following is a members only newsletter - so count your lucky stars you get to read it.

GEOLOGICAL SOCIETY OF NEW ZEALAND
Newsflash 63
15 July 2008

UPDATE
In June I finished my President’s tour of the eight branches. In general I was pleased with the state of health of the society around the nation. One thing is clear though: with jobs aplenty for graduating geologists, students need a lot of encouragement to be involved in branch activities.

I have started talks with the NZ Geophysical Society President, John Townend, about a possible amalgamation of the two societies. John, Laura Wallace, Jan Lindsay and myself have produced a discussion paper, that you can read in the July GSNZ newsletter. Please read these facts, figures and opinions and form your own opinion. This could be the biggest single issue facing the society in its 53 year history. Later this year we will have a survey of members to gauge whether there is support to proceed.

On a related note John, myself, and Jenny Webster-Brown (Geochemical and Mineralogical Society President) recently completed and signed a Memo of Understanding for organising joint conferences. This formalises a lot of the practices we have developed together over the years (conference name, principles and responsibilities of each society, profit sharing etc) and will be a useful template when GSNZ and NZGS run joint conferences with other NZ science societies.

CONFERENCES & MEETINGS
Geosciences ’08
The circular is printed in the July newsletter. This year registration and abstract submission will be online at the conference website where you can also find the circular, posters and everything else: <http://www.victoria.ac.nz/geosciences08/>. The conference venue is Te Papa in Wellington. Things kick off with an Icebreaker on the evening of Sunday 23 November, and finish on the afternoon of Wednesday 26 November 2008. The convenor is Richard Wysoczanski of Victoria University of Wellington.

Climatic & Biotic Events of the Paleogene
This international conference will showcase the latest advances in understanding the causes and consequences of extreme climatic and catastrophic biotic events in the greenhouse world of the early Cenozoic: from the K/T boundary mass extinction to the Paleocene-Eocene thermal maximum and the Eocene-Oligocene greenhouse-icehouse climate transition. Convenors are Chris Hollis and Liz Kennedy. Early registration closes 29th Aug 2008, abstract submission closes 26th Sep 2008. Enquiries: cbep@gns.cri.nz, the website is gns.cri.nz

Geology and Genes IV
Following the success of the Wellington 2006 meeting, a fourth one-day conference in this popular series is planned for Monday 16 Feb 2009 in Christchurch. Joint sponsors are GSNZ and the Systematics Association of New Zealand (SYSTANZ). The purpose of the meetings is to bring geologists and biologists together to discuss the inter-relationships of geology and biology in the origin and evolution of the New Zealand biota. Geological data that helps constrain the answers to critical biological questions and biological insights into interactions between the biota and the changing environment are areas of primary interest. Approximate cost will be $60 per head, which covers venue hire (Hurst Seagar Room, Arts Centre, Christchurch), lunch, morning and afternoon teas, and abstract volume. Final details and registration forms will be sent to those indicating interest. Please indicate your interest by email before 30 August 2008 to
Dr Norton Hiller, Canterbury Museum <nhiller@canterburymuseum.com> or to
Prof. David Penny, Massey University North <D.Penny@massey.ac.nz>

ROYAL SOCIETY PUBLISHING REVIEW
A committee of the Royal Society recently issued a further discussion paper in which various options for the future direction of RSNZ journals, including NZ Journal of Geology & Geophysics, were outlined. The paper is available at rsnz.org. I think the paper does a good SWOT analysis of the present situation journals situation. However, it still recommends that all the existing journals be merged into one super journal, in parallel with a move to open access models. I don’t believe the latter (which I applaud) is dependent on the former (which I deplore). Kari Bassett (kari.bassett@canterbury.ac.nz) is coordinating a response on behalf of GSNZ, so please send her your opinions and/or make your own submission to RSNZ, due on 25 July.

A CONTINENT ON THE MOVE
Deliveries of this authoritative, lavishly illustrated book, edited by Ian Graham, and published by the Geological Society, are due from the printer any day now. A launch in Wellington at a venue such as the National Library, or maybe Parliament, is planned for late August-early September. There will be a full write up of the launch, a book review and purchase details, in the November GSNZ Newsletter.

CHATHAM ISLANDS WINTER EXCURSION 2008

For the seventh year running, Hamish Campbell and Chris Adams are taking leave and heading off on a six-day excursion to the Chatham Islands. Travel is with Air Chathams and accommodation is in Hotel Chatham. You do not have to be fit, and nor do you need to be a geologist! Dates are Wednesday 27 August to Monday 1 September, 2008. Depart from Wellington Airport at 2:30pm and arrive back at about noon. Size of party: 16 guests. Cost: $2,500 per person (GST included; covers all costs except drinks).
