Drilling dry even in coal would be very slow.

I've heard they use triple tube diamond drilling with a plastic inner tube that keeps the coal core mostly dry. The space between the outer and the middle tubes allows drilling fluids to circulate. The plastic inner tube can be sealed with the coal inside and sent to the lab to preserve the volatile combonents. I'm looking for more details but here's a basic page: en.wikipedia.org
