Source rock. Which, due to temperature, is viable only down to a few kilometers. Much deeper and the temperatures cause the petroleum precursors to degrade.

Yes. However, those much shallower than about 10km or so are very rare. Most are some small multiple of that.

The deepest we have drilled is about 10 km.
