I seem to recall that small cap stocks significantly outperformed large cap stocks during the stagflation era of the 70s-80s. If time permits I'll look up some details on this.

The Dow was stuck in a trading range for 18 years, until late 1982. In August of '82 I had just graduated from college and was visiting my parents, and I remember seeing a clip on the evening news of traders celebrating at the NYSE. The Dow was beginning the rally which later carried it to a new all-time high.
