The bigger issue is how much race will matter at the polling booths.

Exactly.

If the Republicans are able to successfully keep thousands of potential Obama voters disenfranchised, as they were able to do to Gore in 2000 and Kerry in 2004, it could be a real horse race.

Guess we'll have to wait and see if the Justice Department is still a part of the GOP Politburo or not.

I'm afraid you may be right.

I think in California that's called the "Bill Bradley" effect... he was a popular black mayor of LA running for governor, had a big poll lead going into the election, and lost because once they were actually in front of the levers, whites couldn't emotionally bring themselves to give the power away.
