Consider that during roughly the same period natural oil seeps in a small area in the Santa Barbara channel offshore CA have released 2 MILLION barrels there.

That is an area known for its beautiful scenery isn't it? Despite the 2M barrels of natural oil spilled. Next to that 290K over the entire GOM isn't so much.

BTW oil spills from the 26 producing platforms in the Santa Barbara channel have released only 900 barrels from spills - at least since the 1969 Union Oil spill (which I think was about 77K barrels).
