The Moon is pulling away from the Earth at the rate of 3.8 meters per century. Ages ago it was much closer and caused huge raging tides that scoured the Earth. This violent weathering action contributed to the "chemical soup" from which life arose. If the human race survives, some day our descendents will gaze upon a Moon that appears much smaller against the sun.
