I do realize that some commentators have referred to the "Tom Bradley" effect implying the white citizens of Los Angeles suddenly realized after 20 years that their mayor was black and they were unhappy about that.

Bradley lost the vote in areas like the Pacific Palisades, which is almost all white, because he approved an oil drilling project in that neighborhood. Some interpreted this swing of white votes in that election as racial rather than NIMBY - I believe quite obviously wrongly.
