CNBC veteran journalist Mark Haines, founding anchor of the morning show Squawk Box, died at home Tuesday evening the age of 65, the financial network says.

Haines was a fixture at the financial network for 22 years.

CNBC senior economic reporter Steve Liesman says Haines may be best remembered for his "calming and commanding presence" during the 9/11 tragedy.
