Actually what we have seen is nearly 40 years of a march rightward led by a very well-orchestrated effort to prey on the fears of Americans about things completely unrelated to their well being. We have seen the suckering of the American public by nonsense ideologies like the non-existent free-market capitalism which really is only corporate corruption.

You can fool most of the people for a very long time.

Most Americans do not have the time or energy to be 'smart' about policies. This is why millions can get swept away by the silliness over gay marriage while ignoring FISA. If we were smart about things, we would not be mired in this mortgage mess or have Bush as a two-term President. If we were smart about things, we would be up in arms about Medicare Part D and the bail out of the private banking industry.

It is because we do not have the time and energy (much less the interest) to be smart about things that elections are moved by terrorist fist bump and swiftboat stupidity. I wish we were smart about things because then we would be much angrier and be voting our own best interests.

I do not see Republicans and Democrats coming together. I see Republicans going back to being the opposition party (like John McCain, always grumpy about something) and the USA getting back to its progressive roots. We have wasted over a generation and gotten ourselves into a really big hole.
