OT: The key determinant of crime rates is the age of the population, as the vast majority of crimes in all modern societies are committed by males in their teens and twenties. The %age of the population in that cohort has been declining rapidly in the US and Canada, which is why the crime rates have also been in such decline (something you would never know from the media).

An interesting exception lies with our aboriginal populations, which are much younger than the rest of the population and have much higher crime rates. Needless to say, this is not the only reason for their overrepresentation in the prisons, but a key factor nonetheless.
