If Constantinopla had not fallen int he hands of the Turks and the migration of the scholars to Italy (and the texts tghat they brought) had not happened, there'd been no Renaissance.

After that Italy was invaded and the Renaissance spread northwards.

It can be the case that the figures were "massaged": someone is trying to show that their efforts have bore fruit.

It can be the case that thhe immigrants went deep under the shadows and are being more careful and as a result more difficult to be counted.
