Who said oil companies are the enemy? The blame rests with an administration that refused, to encourage conservation and alternative fuel sources. Not to mention a fraudulent war in Iraq which consumes huge amounts of global oil production. As for the so-called free market, someday the minutes of those secret meetings Cheney had with energy industry representatives, including Enron, will come out.
Then we'll see just how 'free' the markets really were the last eight years...
It's funny how subsidies and huge tax breaks from the federal government are all viewed as the 'free market' by some, while any attempts at regulation or stimulation of real competition is labeled 'government meddling.'
