When I was a kid my buddy and I slept on the screened in porch. Outside the door was a garbage can, which the bear frequently visited.

We never woke up. But we had to clean up the mess.

The only time I ever felt unsafe around a bear is when I tracked down a sound that sounded like a baby crying "Whaaa! Whaaa!" It turned out to be a very small bear cub. Momma could not have been far away.

I skedaddled.
