Because Republicans have convinced people that government can't make a difference in their lives, can't solve their intractable problems, hence the only thing that matters are divisive social issues.

Most Republicans haven't "convinced" people -- they have simply experienced the failures of government first hand and know for themselves what the score is.

We generally recognize the value in self-reliance. Look at the failure of the Welfare State. An absolute disaster -- not only financially, but in terms of the human tragedy it created in the United States.

If I dump food on my back porch daily, the animals will accumulate and become unable to fend for themselves. There are no free rides in life. Government cannot correct flaws in human nature.

"Ain't no one who can fix that stuff,"

There have been a lot of changes in the country in my lifetime... but that sentiment is probably the most important change. This country was always optimistic that things were going to get incrementally better each generation. Not so anymore. And defeatism leads to defeat.
