So true! It blows me away when my friends say they will never travel Southwest. I find the efficiency and precision admirable.

As far as I'm concerned the reason for boarding the way they do is simple. It helps ensure every single flight is completely booked. Rarely do I see one open seat when flying Southwest. And when you land between flights, just walk to any counter and they will change you to another plane if it's leaving earlier.

I do that all the time when traveling, even if it saves me half-an-hour arriving at the end it's worth it.

Have to be careful about your luggage moving with you though, but, the staff is usually very receptive and hussles your bags to the new flight.
