Looks like the democrats are willing to tradeoff drilling in the ocs and anwr for tighter regulation of energy speculation. That would make me perfectly happy in both respects. It would be like a dream come true if they put an end to naked shorting for all stocks.

Agreed, but even if all those initiatives were started tomorrow, there will be a 10-year lag before they begin to make a meaningful contribution to US energy supplies Not knocking the notion that it still needs to happen, I'm just making the observation that even in a best case scenario, it gets worse before it gets better In the short run a global recession might help keep POO down, but one needs to be careful about what one wishes for -- a broad recession would also mean that the Bank of New Amerika in Beijing won't be needing to buy any more US treasuries since they would no longer be generating a huge surplus of dollars to deal with -- then who's going to finance the US budget deficit? To make a long story short, driving down the price of oil doesn't solve all the problems

'Once the USA has a plan to get off foreign oil and we start drilling the OCS and Anwr, design and give permits for nuke plants...enact wind, solar subsidies...lease federal land etc. Crude will drop like a rock. But then we can't let up. We'll be happy when we don't depend on the Middle East. May not go start stupid wars for oil there. doh.' We need oil to stay above some baseline magic number for misallocation of capital into alternative energy to go to extremes.. Hey the way this county always overindulges I give it 4-5 years before that happens. Let the Middle East go back to third world status and rebuild a different economy like China and India. Best way to spread democracy and rid the world of terrorists..
